Justin Paton

Justin Paton is one of New Zealand's foremost art writers. A former lecturer in art history and theory at Auckland's Unitec Institute of Technology, he was curator of contemporary art at Dunedin Public Art Gallery 1999-2008, and is now senior curator at Christchurch Art Gallery. His previous books - on artists and exhibitions - include I've Abandoned Me: A Ronnie van Hout Survey, Ricky Swallow: Field Recordings, Jeffrey Harris, States of Grace: Anne Noble and Life and Limb: Warren Viscoe.
From 1999 to 2005 he was also editor of the influential journal of arts and letters, Landfall. He has written for many local and international publications and is a frequent commentator on the arts on television and radio. How to Look at a Painting is his first book for a general audience. He lives in Christchurch with his partner Vita and sons Otto and Amos.
