Gerry Evans becomes writer-in-residence at Michael King Centre
Awa Press author Gerry Evans has been announced as the new writer-in-residence at the Michael King Writers' Centre in Devonport, Auckland.
Gerry Evans' latest book Killing Your Darlings, a humorous account of his experiences on the way to becoming a writer, will be published by Awa Press in April. Evans was born and grew up in Wales and went to sea at the age of 16. He later settled in New Zealand, and worked for many years in the Seamen's Union. He took up writing after he was made redundant by the union and couldn't find another job. Killing Your Darlings is his third book.
The Writers' Centre was established in memory of acclaimed writer and historian Michael King, who died in a car accident in 2004. It is based in an historic signalman's house with panoramic views of Auckland city and Waitemata Harbour, and administered by a trust. A stipend is provided for the writer-in-residence by Creative New Zealand. Evans's tenure runs from January to August.
